I’m Raphaël LACROIX, a French computer scientist developping various applications in my free time ranging from definitely useless to somewhat usefull. I also do quite a lot of Capture the flag and cybersecurity challenges.

This write-up is about the first flag of the OSINT ZiTF CTF challenge

Analyzing the image, we see that it has an Alpine look, and the chalets are characteristic, We note the shape and color of their roofs, which will come in handy later.

You can do a reverse search on this in the image to locate the POI, let us focus on what looks like the most remarkable feature of the landscape since it’s probably what tourists or locals would put on their travel blog, promotional website etc. :

We find https://www.randos-montblanc.com/en/easy-hikes/mont-lachat-chatillon.html which has this photo:

We deduce that we can look at “les languières”. Looking on Google Earth we can see that the landforms match up perfectly, we have the POI and the valley in which the photo was taken.

To locate more precisely, we look for an electric wire crossing a road as explained here (sorry French link, but I’ll try to do a blog post about that in English) We finally found the location by combining the power line and the positions of the chalets.
